A photo from Wg Cdr Luddite now. On the theme of 'most obscure aircraft schemes in the Western Desert ' we have a JU 87B formally of 209 Squadriglia captured in Sept 1941 after running out of fuel. Subsequently RAF markings were added and it was flown back to Egypt for evaluation. the 1/285 scale model is by Raiden (a 3D computer sculpt).

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have wanted to be the pilot flying that back to Blimey!
Reminds me of the story of the RAF crew being transported as prisoners on Cant flying boat. They overpowered the Italian crew and flew it to Malta, and every AA gun on the island opened up on them! They survived a crash landing and the Italians cracked open a bottle of wine for all to share!
Cheers

I bet the shape of it caused a bit of alarm to the RAF Regt AA Crews!
ReplyDeleteA nice curious bit of history for sure :)
ReplyDeletePhew, I would not have liked to have been the RAF pilot that flew that back for evaluation...You can put all the roundels and red white and blue on it you like, but a Stuka looks like a Stuka! :)
ReplyDeleteNice, is it a novelty or do you use it in games?

ReplyDeleteYou'd want danger money, wouldn't you?

ReplyDeleteI expect they had a go at it anyway.

ReplyDeleteI felt it was time for more obscure stuff!

ReplyDeleteAs it's not mine that is down to Wg Cdr Luddite. But don't be too surprised if it appears in a game....
It's probably a novelty but if you bung it into a game it certainly provides a challenging decision for both Axis and Allied fighter pilots.
