1/1200 Fleet Review - US Navy

Edited 10/12/12 - due to an considerable expansion of my 1/1200 fleets, readers may also wish to view this newer post.
My US Navy contingent is possibly the most balanced of my fleets, being made up of the following:
1 Battleship - New Jersey (Revell)
2 Carriers - Enterprise, Hornet (Revell)
1 Heavy Cruiser - Philidelphia
1 Light Cruiser - Flint
7 Destroyers - Farragut, Brooks, Mahan, Gridley, Benson, Gearing, Fletcher (these and the cruisers are all metal castings from a number of makers)

A better view of Hornet - a nice kit built straight from the box.

  1. Hi Tim,

I had no idea you had such a huge collection of 1/1200th hardware from all points of the globe!

Very nice indeed and I am fast becoming keen on your painting technique for these - it looks darned effective!

    All the best,

    DC

To be honest it has rather surprised me too! The one box I went looking for a few months ago turned out to be three boxes.... The painting 'style' looks OK to me, and especially with the very detailed plastic models is the only real alternative to painting a awful lot of fiddly detail. More ships soon!

  3. Tim,

You are right ... it is by far and away your most balanced fleet.

I have been looking at my collection of unmade 1:1200th models ... and I had not realised how many I had. When my current 'craze' for building larger wooden ship models is on the wane - or I am in need of a change - I must start building the models that I have.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Really nice ships - you are better than me - all my US and Japanese ships are still on their sprues. I recognise most of them - except USS Philidelphia. Is that one from MY?

I find that the 1200 scale models can be churned out quite quickly - at least they can with my slapdash approach!

See above comments and go for it! The Philly is a 'Superior' metal model - I dread to think what it would cost to buy new!

  7. Very nice Tim, you know, I've never considered naval battles, but seeing your work and having recently seen a docu about Jutland, I can feel another tangent coming on...

That's the gteat thing about wargamers - we're all very different but equally weak and impressionable when confronted with some shiny toys!

I have serious little ship syndrome comparing my 1:2400 scale fleets to yours.

Well spare a thought for my 1/6000 fleet!

  11. They may be rough and ready but they look the part of a fleet at sea.

Rough is fine - just as long as they're ready!

I had to have a USN contingent to please our chums in the north American colonies...

  14. Where did the Yank CA/CL/DD/DDE's come from?

Do you have a magic hat or have yo been busy?

How did you find out about the magic hat? The cruisers and DDs are all metal models - and rather nice ones too. The DDs came from eBay, as did one of the cruisers. The other from a junk shop while on holiday a few years ago.
