More Soviet infantry

Behold the wonder that is my newly-completed Soviet Category 3 Motor Rifle Battalion.
Made up wholly of plastic figures, a few are from a cheap Chinese set found in larger Carrefour stores in Belgium...
...while most are the trusty old Airfix comrades.
We've already seen the mortar and SA-7 bodges.  This Sagger platoon lowers the tone still further.

  1. Nice work Tim- far too nicely painted for a category 3 Division, the Cat As will get all huffy come May Day parade.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  3. I like the Sagger platoon, but then I've always had a soft spot for the Sagger, particularly since I moved to Stoke-on-Trent and finally discovered what the word means. (A sagger is a large container made out of clay, used to protect pottery during firing in the days of coal-fired bottle kilns).

A question, though. Some appear to be painted brown, some green. Is that just due to the vagaries of photography and computer screens? Or are they painted that way, and if so, why?

Ah yes, but all their training time was spent varnishing!

One lives and learns! As regards colours, a few lucky comrades have greatcoats - which are a different shade.

  7. They look very fine Tim, I am sure they can manage the Rhine in six days. Or so.

The individual bases they are on look very professional with their rounded edges. Did you make those yourself or buy them?

  8. Tim: Obviously, being a category C unit, they're low on the priority list for greatcoats :)

Regarding the Sagger, I recently acquired a British army intelligence report from 1968, with an article about the AT-1, AT-2, and AT-3. Evidently the illustrator didn't know what a sagger was either. I can't embed an image, so I've put it on Imgur.

  9. Airfix Red Commander us my second favourite Airfix figure after the DAK grenade thrower

Argh, why didn't Airfix just repeat the /32 scale russians in 1/72?

  10. I believe that maybe some Hong Kong copyist did produce the Airfix 1:32 scale figures in the 20mm 1:76 scale. I bought heaps of them about 40 years ago. Some of these knock-off were pretty crude, the prone grenade guy and LMG guy especially. However, they can be used to make light mortar or anti-tank rifle teams. I have zillions more recently acquired that will form the backbone of the Army of Tchagai...

I like the look of this battalion, Tim, but a special thank you for the pic of the sagger team. I just gotta have some of those!

6 days? If NATO stays in bed and the BTRs don't break down.
