Meanwhile on the other side of the table confusion and carnage reigns. Here, you may recall, two VG infantry regiments had appeared, followed by SHS infantry and finally a VG cavalry regiment. The problem was soon bloodily resolved and bodies (mostly SHS) littered the field.
The VG lancers who appeared at point 4 charged off towards their captured car and after a brief and rather one-sided struggle, regained possession thereof.
The VG gunners entertained themselves by firing into the SHS rear. Ooh, nasty!
Captured nurses were searched carefully in case they were really Svenhasselsteiner special forces.
An overview of the situation. Confused? Yes, so were we....
Unable to figure out how it works, the VG lancers drag the car to safety.
Will the Vulgarian car be saved?
Will the SHS general finish the crossword?
Will Captain Widdrington fall in the river?
At least one of these questions will be answered in the next and (thankfully) final instalment!
Regarding the Svenhasselsteiner Co's apparent lack of interest in the battle and your inference that he is guilty of a deliberate dereliction of duty. It must be said in his defence, that it was a very engrossing crossword and the general is rather hard of hearing. Therefore it's quite possible that he had not noticed the commotion going on around him.
ReplyDeleteIn any case at 88 years of age you can't expect him to push the car!!!
Also the treatment of our nurses was both appalling and very Vulgarian in it's nature!!!
ReplyDeleteTim, these are really fun.
ReplyDeleteGrand stuff!
ReplyDeleteUsing the horses to tow the car away seemed to best of a range of poor options.
ReplyDeleteAs the nurses were wearing jackboots, our chaps were somewhat supicious.
Those wer not Jack Boots. They were standard issue 60043 denier stockings!!!
ReplyDeleteVery enjoyable! I like the casualty markers.
ReplyDelete...Steam cars...The way of the future. Far more reliable! :)
As a point of interest; 60043 denier stockings are marvelous things. They're comfortable for the nurses and hard wearing in the field. In addition to this they can also act as waders when one is trout fishing.

ReplyDeleteWas the General able to finish the crossword? I think we should be told!

ReplyDeleteGlad you're enjoying it - we certainly did!

ReplyDeleteI wonder what HGW would have made of it.
Martin Rapier
ReplyDeleteYes, but that was only after the failure of the lancers' first plan, where one of them sat in the car shouting 'giddy up!'

ReplyDeleteAn interesting idea -it may catch on....
Tim Gow - Was the General able to finish the crossword? I think we should be told!
ReplyDeleteThe general did manage to finish the crossword but it was heavy going. One soldier told me that whilst pushing the car he overheard the general asking his driver to help on a couple of questions.
“Otto” the general said “ Can you help me with 14 down?” "What's the clue?" the driver asked,
" A unit of power equal to 1 joule per second; the power dissipated by a current of 1 ampere flowing across a resistance of 1 ohm" the general said.
“Watt” said the driver. Then the general repeated the clue.
Next the soldier said he heard the general ask
“Otto, any ideas what this one might be? It’s got 5 letters: ‘Figure formed by two sides meeting at a vertex’ “
“Try angle” said the driver.
“Don’t be ridiculous man.” Said the general. “those have three sides.”
"Yes, but that was only after the failure of the lancers' first plan, where one of them sat in the car shouting 'giddy up!'"
ReplyDeleteWell, yes. There aren't many motor vehicles in Vulgaria and it requires a corps of specialists to operate the few we do have.
Such specialists are not generally found in light cavalry regiments.
