1re Division d'Infanterie Motorisée

A chat with Bob Cordery the other day reminded me that I still had unposted photos of more of my extensive accumulation of 1940 French units.  This then is 1re DIM (that's a motorised infantry division to you and me).
I used as a base some of the infantry figures (mostly Raventhorpe) acquired from Ian Russell Lowell, together with a few of his inspired scratchbuilt vehicles.  The challenge of finding enough lorries was overcome by using some horrible bandy-plastic toys I found while on holiday some years ago.  After spray painting them green I drew on Citroen chevrons.  Convincing?  No.  Cheap?  Oh yes!
One of IRL's amazing scratchbuilt (from balsa!) Hotchkiss light tanks.
The CO gets to smoke around in this modified Matchbox field car.
The fearsome AT unit (many divisions didn't have anything!) -
a Skytrex 25mm Hotchkiss gun and another dodgy 'Citroen'.
The full division in all it's terrifying glory.   Yet more French units still to come...

  1. Cool, one of my favourites. Nice mixture of figures and some great scratch built vehicles

  2. The H-35 and R-35 were such cute tanks. It's a shame there aren't more kits of them. I am highly impressed with that scratch build though.

I have metal versions from Skytrex and RAFM and at least two makers do them in resin. Or you could grab a block of balsa and start carving......

  7. A good looking unit Tim. The field car always reminds me of Daktari for some reason.

Good use of the plastic HK trucks as well.

If you're thinking or trying this I'd like some 1/32 scale Renault FTs......

I think the toy car is meant to be a FIAT 'Campagnola'
