Regular readers may recall seeing this Spitfire Mk.XIV and V.1 previously http://megablitzandmore.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/a-tale-of-two-spitties-part-2.html
It will come as no surprise that the V.1 sparked an idea for a game. This was duly mocked up and
can be seen in play above.
The game is a single player, umpire moderated affair which lasts for a maximum of 10 minutes, the
player's task being to shoot down flying bombs.
The play test games yielded some ideas, and Doodlebuggers will be presented by Wargame
Developments at several shows in 2014.
More pics will follow when I have a rather more photogenic playing surface....
I thought the preferred method was to get your wing under it's wing and use the airflow to flip the V1's wing up and (to use the USAF's terminology) cause it to depart controlled flight and provoke an unintended intersection with the ground.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting TIm - spookily I was just reading about solo war gaming (I'm a bit anti-social)!
ReplyDeleteThis must be a tricky one to 'model' (in game format), and from what I've read the real process of dive strafing and wing tipping were very tricky in themselves. Terrific ingenuity for a game. :)
Hi Tim,
ReplyDeleteI am looking at something similar in 15mm as I am due to inherit a Flames of War V1 soon.
Very intersted at seeing how this works out.
All the best,

ReplyDeleteI love the USAF language. Being Brits, we talk of the bomb crashing...
The plucky RAF pilot does indeed have the option of shooting at the V1 or trying to wing flip it.
ReplyDeleteBoth involve a degree of risk, as my various attempts to down the dastardly Hun rocket bombs amply demonstrated.

ReplyDelete"...works out..." You're expecting a lot aren't you?

ReplyDeleteNever mind - I expect we'll eventually get a competent player who can show us how it's done...
Hi Tim,
ReplyDeleteShooting down V1s makes for a very challenging solo game because whilst the bombs fly straight and level at a constant speed in my experience it is really easy to get the approach messed up before either shooting at them or trying the 'wing flip'.
I am sure it will work out. Eventually.
All the best,

ReplyDeleteI think you may be considerably overestimating the seriousness with which I have approached this game...
Rivet counting alert:
ReplyDeleteIt's not a Spit Mk IV it is a Mk XIV

ReplyDeleteTypo corrected. It is indeed a Mk.XIV.
