During last week's Little Wars game, it struck me that some of the photos were very evocative of the original pictures in HGW's books. Just for fun I converted a few to what used to be called 'black and white'. The combination of shiny toys, block-style buildings and a varnished hardwood floor certainly works for me. What do you think?
Tim Gow,
ReplyDeleteThey look very like the original photographs in Wells's LITTLE WARS.
All the best,
Bob
Tim,
ReplyDeleteI second Bob's comment - your pictures recapture the style of Wells's original photographs very well.
Regards,
Arthur
You were wearing a properly starched collar when you took these I trust?
ReplyDeleteHi Tim,
ReplyDeleteVery evocative and certainly bring to mind the original - perhaps this should be obligatory for FLW games going forward - in order to capture the essence of Little Wars.
All the best,
DC

ReplyDeleteWell done. I hope that you wore straw boaters for the event!
Cheers

No starched collars I'm afraid. The b/w photos really capture the essence of Wells though.

ReplyDeleteI like to think that HGW would approve!

ReplyDeleteThanks - given the impact of HGW's games on our hobby praise can come no higher!

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid standards of attire have slipped somewhat since HGW's day. The amount of time one spends lying on the floor tends to discourage snappy dressing.
David Crook
ReplyDeleteGood idea - I'll look at some of the older photos and give them the same treatment.
Peter Douglas
ReplyDeleteSadly no - see my reply to CK - but I have acquired a straw boater for use in such games.

ReplyDeleteThe shirt I was wearing does have brass collar stiffeners - is that close enough?
Yes, funny how removing colour can add colour of another sort. Looks just the thing.

ReplyDeleteIt's tempting to paint the toys in shades of grey!
Nice and unusual pictures!
ReplyDeleteVery moreish, Tim, the merest taste of what these Little wars can look like. I do like the ammo truck (I don't recall that aspect of HGW's original, but I haven't seen it for several years now. The staff element looks cool too.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Ion
I did see a Western gunfight game at a convention done in shades of grey. Looked just like TV. Bit beyond me.
ReplyDeletePhil
ReplyDeleteThanks. It started off as a daft experiment but people seem to like it.

ReplyDeleteI don't recall there being motor vehicles in HGW's books, but trains certainly feature.

ReplyDeleteI think we'll stick with full colour then.
