These chaps are ancient in every sense of the word! I remember owning some of these Hinchliffe cavalrymen in the '70s and so was pleased to bag them very cheaply at a recent show. The horses were sourced from the large box of equine lead which I rescued from JR's attic last year and include castings from several manufacturers, including Hinchliffe, Essex and Warrior. Spears were cut from florist's wire. All have been 'treated' to my usual basic paintwork with a finishing coat of Ronseal. The bases are 8x6cm MDF.
Nostalgia in a piccie -thanks for posting it!
ReplyDeleteI never owned that particular figure but, I have tons of Byzantines in the same pose (and on the same half armored horse!) by Hinchliffe so it's almost like being there! Can you still get Hinchliffe?
ReplyDeleteI have the very man, bought him from a rummage box in Tangly Model Workshop in Guildford in about 1981!
ReplyDeleteGave him a fetching purple scheme and used him as an Officer in my 'Roman' army! He had his original spear which was - in scale - thicker than a banister-rail!

ReplyDeleteI have a few Byzantines too! The Hinchliffe moulds have been through a few owners but the figures are indeed still available: http://www.hinchliffe.co.uk/home.htm

ReplyDeleteA Persian serving as a Roman officer? Clearly late empire! The 'original' spear would have been pretty similar in appearance to the wire I have used - perhaps your chap had been re-equipped with an old Minifigs 'tree-trunk'?
Thanks Tim, I want a few Sassanid Persians to mix in with my minifigs...)
