JR's Panzer I

Following on from my recent posts in which I introduced some conversions carried out by John Robertson, I present another of his models.  This is his Panzer Ia which clearly (and indeed not unlike the original) began life as a Bren Carrier.  I have not made any modifications to this, although I will touch up the paint at some point, not least because I'd love to use it in a game.
While fault can be found with the dimensions and detailing, it is clearly (to me at least) a Panzer I and must have been built sometime in the 1960s, long before the appearance of the plethora of reference materials available to today's modellers.
Coming soon - JR's Carden Lloyd Tankette!

  1. The real question is which vehicle is more useful militarily.....My money is on the Bren carrier! That said it is a pretty good conversion...)

    On another front:
It's so good to know I'm not alone here! inspired by your 14 Panzer Division photos and other not necessarily overly historically accurate stand ins...I made something today I took a Sd Kfz 7 half-track in 1/76th given to me built, re painted it and kit bashed a V-3 missile from a toy,
going to use it as a scenario generator or objective.

  2. Thanks for the kind words guys. And to think that John nearly binned it!
Don - I suspect you're right about it's usefulness. Let's see pics of your Sd7.

  3. Tim,

I built something similar years ago following the instructions (and plan) in an article in the old Airfix Magazine.

The difficult bit was the track, which needed to be slightly rejigged to represent the layout on the Pzkpfw I.

The result was not as good as JR's model ... but I was happy with the result.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. It looks a winner to me. I am sure that most of the pre war tanks/tankettes stemmed from the same design team orginally for the chassis.

    More please.

For such small model it has clearly taken a huge amount of work - especially carving the suspension away from the wheels.

I wonder if the Airfix carrier has led to as many variants as Carden-Lloyd's original?

  6. Lovely conversion (for the time) I only got as far as the Japanese conversion of the Bren Carrier to a tankette that was used in Indonesia. It vanished sometime over the years.

I think I know the version you mean - basically a carrier with a roof and a small turret (or should that be turret-ette?) I think I may have one somewhere (also from JR's attic).
