Mons, 1914 - part 1

Martin ran this game on 11 January using his15mm toys and Richard Brooks's Op14 rules.  John led the BEF while I donned the field grey spiky helmet.
The initial setup.  The Germans (three corps of 'em) are poised to march on to the playing area.
The British salient at Mons.  The train (between the buildings) just about depart is full of Belgian tourists en route to the seaside!
From the German side this looked a very impressive defensive position.
A rather atmospheric shot of the German cavalry screen.
German air recce gives the Brits a looking at.  (The 'plane was my sole material contribution to the game!)
The British artillery soon opened up on the advancing field grey hordes.
An overview of the centre/left as the Germans advance.
The German advance on the right.  The Germans have deployed some brigades to see off the British cavalry screen.  The train can be seen in the distance.
Overview - the Brits in Mons are digging in.
The impressive-looking German artillery arrives.
The German right pushed back the cavalry and reaches the canal.
Coming next - the battle intensifies!

I'm really not sure. Hopefully Martin will chip in and tell us!

  3. Hmm, I'm picturing this with 1/72nd figures, maybe 1 level down? But I think I'll just enjoy watching for now.

We had three corps and a cavalry division on the German side and it did look damn impressive.

That'll be down to my quietly efficient leadership and staff work...

  7. The figures are 15mm, mostly Peter Pig supplemented by artillery from Irregular (the German 150s) and QRF (British 4.5s and 60pdr). The train is from one of the Irregular 6mm train sets as is the track. The train has appeared in a surprising number of games over the years. In OP14 the units are brigades so the bases are roughly battalions. The German units represented are the leading Corps of 1st Army which actually fought on the 23rd, the rest of 1st Army (another three Corps) is following behind.

Thanks for that. I'll do the photos and airy generalities and you can provide the facts!
