One of the local model shops sells bundles of cheap balsa offcuts (less than 1ft lengths).Tim Gowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00561988214539953646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7152572458899289416.post-37439294615327440272011-11-22T14:33:28.382+00:002011-11-22T14:33:28.382+00:00I agree whole heartedly on the usefulness of balsa...I agree whole heartedly on the usefulness of balsa. On the same Jamestown project my daughter used balsa for wooden structures and the firing platform behind the palisades. A wash of raw umber and bingo weathered wood.

Also bass wood is nice - tougher the carve/cut but doesn't dent as much.

PDPeter Douglashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14118894381672707297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7152572458899289416.post-15176338179346067472011-11-22T09:19:01.139+00:002011-11-22T09:19:01.139+00:00Paul

Needle-nosed pliers helped but at 2am one's fine motor skills become well gross motor skills.

PDPeter Douglashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14118894381672707297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7152572458899289416.post-24371128717528893982011-11-21T18:57:11.381+00:002011-11-21T18:57:11.381+00:00Peter Douglas

Bamboo skewers are useful for the upright stake variety of palisade (typical of early North American forts). I've still got scars from helping my daughter with her grade 10 history project - a scale model of the Jamestown settlement.

PDPeter Douglashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14118894381672707297noreply@blogger.com
